XML sitemap is a document that helps Google and search engines better understand the content of your website.

What is sitemap and why is it so important?

Sitemap is a protocol that allows a webmaster for a website to inform Google and the main search engines about the site URLs that are available for crawling. The Sitemap allows search engines to find all your pages that can be indexed or those that may not have been "seen" by them. XML Sitemap allows you to add specific information about the URLs it contains:

  • when they were last updated
  • how often are the changes
  • the relationship between certain pages in the site

The sitemap.xml file is an inclusion file and the robots.txt file is of exclusion.

How do you generate an XML Sitemap?

Generation is a simple process, Google recommends using http://xml-sitemaps.com.
