When trying to download/send emails using Outlook Express or Outlook, your messages may return:
- The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'your_account', Server:'your_SMTP_server', Protocol:SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): NO, Socket error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800ccc0e
- The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'your_account', Server:'your_POP3_server', Protocol:POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): NO, Socket error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800ccc0e
Cause
These error messages may be due to your attempt to connect to a port that is blocked or unused by the email server. If the message is returned when trying to send emails then the blocked port is 25. If the message is returned when trying to download the emails then the blocked port is 110.
Solution
The problem can be solved by opening ports 25/110 in your firewall (from your computer or network/intranet server).
