Due to the possibility of easy management of WordPress using WP-CLI you can use the plugin command to manage the WordPress plugins from the command line. This command is used to install, uninstall, update, enable/disable a plugin.
To install and activate a WordPress plugin using the WP-CLI plugin command, we recommend that you follow the instructions below.
- Log in to the server via SSH with the cPanel user who owns the website you want to work on.
- Use the cd command to access the root folder of your website eg:
cd public_html/my_websiteReplace public_html/my_website with the real path to the root folder of your website.
There are several ways to get/install a plugin. Choose the one that suits you best. If you are not sure which is the best option, we recommend the Slug option.
Slug
Run the search subcommand to find the plugin:
wp plugin search gutenbergReplace the search term given as an example (gutenberg) with the name of the plugin you are looking for.
- Notice the slug value that appears next to the plugin you want to install. You will use this option in the command to install and activate the searched plugin.

Execute the following command by replacing gutenberg with the slug value found in the search:
wp plugin install gutenberg –activateZIP File
- Download the plugin's ZIP file and upload it to your server. Make sure you only upload the ZIP file to the root folder of your website.
Run the following command, replacing gutenberg.1.9.1.zip with the real name of the plugin file:
wp plugin install gutenberg.1.9.1.zip –activateDownload Link
Find the URL to download the plugin you want to install.
Run the following command, replacing https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/gutenberg.1.9.1.zip with the actual download link of your plugin:
wp plugin install https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/gutenberg.1.9.1.zip –activate
